Orville Gibson, a restaurant clerk in Kalamazoo, MI, began making mandolins and guitars in his home workshop in 1894. The Gibson company (official name: The Gibson Mandolin-Guitar Co., Ltd.) was organized by a group of Kalamazoo businessmen in 1902. The company initially focused on producing only mandolins but were able to maintain a leadership role in the music industry prompting prompting a name change to Gibson, Inc., in 1923 and the guitar line release in the 1930s.

A manufacturing facility was opened in Nashville in 1974, and instruments were made in Kalamazoo and Nashville until 1984.

Gibson is the only company to establish industry-standard models in every major fretted instrument style: acoustic guitar (flat top and arch top), electric guitar (hollow body, semi-hollow body and solid body), electric bass, banjo and mandolin.

Gibson's best known signature lines are the Les Paul electric solid body (introduced in 1952), the Chet Atkins solidbody acoustic (introduced 1982), the B.B. King Lucille electric semi-hollow body (introduced 1980) and the Earl Scruggs banjo (introduced 1984).

The Gibson Les Paul represents the most successful endorsement agreement in the history of musical instruments. Gibson has made over 100 different variations of Les Paul models. The body shape is a registered trademark and is recognized around the world as an icon for rock and roll music.

Gibson has always had a close relationship with musicians at the top of their game. Besides Les Paul, famous Gibson players include B. B. King, Chet Atkins, and jazz artists such as Howard Roberts and Herb Ellis. Not to mention famous Les Paul guitar players like Jimmy Page and Joe Perry as well as Angus Young, famous for his Gibson SG guitar.

Sabian Cymbals Founder Robert Zildjian Passes Away at Age 89

Robert Zildjian, the founder of Sabian Cymbals and a true giant in the drum industry, died today (28 March) at the age of 89 after a battle with cancer.

Robert was part of the legendary Zildjian family, makers of Armenian cymbals with a lineage that stretches back centuries. His father, Avedis III, founded the Zildjian Company in Boston in 1928. Robert and his older brother Armand became key players in popularizing the Zildjian brand and turning it into one premier manufacturers of cymbals in the world.
Avedis III passed away in 1979, and after an argument between the two brothers, Robert launched his own company, Sabian (the name is an acronym based on the first two letters of his children: SAlly, BIll, ANdy), in Meductic, New Brunswick, Canada, in 1981. The company quickly emerged as a powerhouse in the drum industry, with many of the world's top players choosing Sabian as their cymbal of choice.

Sabian posted a statement on their company website today:
It is with deep, deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Robert "RZ" Zildjian, our beloved founder and leader. A tireless and dynamic force within the drum industry, he inspired each one of us in the Sabian family to work harder, to reach farther, to make a difference — and he led us by example.
His professional story is well known. Having been dealt a major career setback at an age where most men would have opted for retirement, RZ instead chose to re-invent the cymbal business with his own hand-crafted brand, a brand that would forever change the face and sound of popular music. With his bare hands he shaped the Sabian cymbal brand into his life's story — and by extension we became his family.
We mourn his passing, and he will be forever in our hearts. But we are better people for having known RZ, and we are richer for having worked alongside him. We draw comfort from the knowledge that his spirit will live on in the music made by drummers the world over.
Rest in peace, RZ.

Their algorithms have been used by many major hardware guitar effects companies since that time.

Audiffex has expanded their product line beyond guitars, with effects tailored to keyboards, bass, vocals and others.  Perhaps best of all, Audiffex prices are super-affordable.

Gallien-Krueger Amplification 2 and Pro Version
A result of the cooperation between Gallien-Krueger, the leading bass gear company, and Audiffex, you get one of the best bass amps simulations. GK Amplification is plug-in that includes exact models of Gallien-Krueger amps and speakers. All the functions of the original amps (Bi-Amp, filters) are available and all of the controls do the same as their hardware counterparts.

inTone

TC Electronic's Ditto Looper Comes Alive!

By now, you’ve probably seen and heard about Ditto Looper - and you know it can do some amazing stuff. But how does Ditto Looper work if you aren’t in the mood for more complicated things and just want to rock out and have fun?

Key Features

  • The guitar player's looper - made for guitarists by guitarists
  • Dirt simple looping - and nothing but looping
  • True bypass and Analog-Dry-Through  5 minutes of looping
  • Undo / Redo function
  • Unlimited overdubs
  • 24 bit uncompressed high quality audio
  • Ultra-small footprint

Looping Sense

Ditto Looper was designed from the ground up with guitarists in mind. TC Electronic made sure Ditto Looper takes up minimal space on your board, but still has the essential 'make your guitar-heart jump' features such as True Bypass and Analog-Dry-Through making sure your tone stays uncolored.

One Knob To Rule Them All

Ditto Looper simply loops. Well. It's 'one knob' button may seem like a minimalist approach, but all the essentials are there: record, undo/redo, stop and erase are all accessed via different foot-commands that always make sense, whether you are building loops, changing from one part to the next (we're looking at you, live performers) or adding layers to a song.

Fender Complete Guide: Telecaster (Part One)

canada, electric, fender, guitar, instrument, music, musical, shop, Telecaster
Pictured Guitar: Fender American Design Telecaster Burnt Tobacco Rosewood
L.A. Music recently received two of 48 limited edition Telecasters.  To celebrate this extraordinary line of guitars, it seemed fitting to do a complete guide on the Fender guitar that started it all - The Telecaster (short form: Tele).

The rich history of Fender Guitars starts with the Telecaster.  Believe it or not, it took two years and multiple name changes before the now-known classic Telecaster was created.  The Tele first debuted in February of 1951 (that's more that 60 years!) and Fender has consciously stuck to it's classic design and tone.

Fender Telecasters have a versatile, unique and distinct sound.  They are known for their bright, rich and cutting tone; the typical Telecaster Twang.  Additionally, the tele is versatile in the notion that it can produce a mellow and bluesy tone depending on the pickup.

Key Features

Single-Cutaway Body

The Telecaster's distinctive single-cutaway body has been an unchanging hallmark of its design ever since it was introduced in 1951.

Pickups

Classic Telecaster tone is a long-revered product of its dual single-coil pickups—especially the bright, snappy tone of the bridge pickup. Other pickup options lend even more versatility.

Neck and Fingerboard

Telecaster guitars are known for comfortable and easily adjusted necks with a variety of profiles, eminently playable fingerboards and an unmistakable headstock.

Fender Complete Guide: Stratocaster (Part One)

Fender, Guitar, Stratocastor, Electric, Guitar, Music, Musical, Instrument, Canada, Shop

Spring hasn't touched down in many parts of the world yet but it is already safe to say that Fender has had a revolutionary and successful 2013 thus far.  With the release of their new Fender Select line at NAMM 2013 and multiple other exciting releases (like this and this), Fender is taking complete reign and absolute control over the music making industry.

Our original plan was to do a round up of Fender's 2013 releases.   It's still in our plan but just a round up would not do this legendary brand justice.  Instead, we are going to be bring you a complete guide (in parts) to Fender Musical Instruments starting with their main act; the Fender Stratocaster.

The Fender Stratocaster (Short form: Strat) is an archetypal instrument.  This means that when any individual (regardless of music knowledge) thinks of an electric guitar; the sound, shape and design is usually that of a Strat.  Most people associate an electric guitar with Fender's Stratocaster.   If you don't believe us on how iconic this guitar really is, take a look at this picture of legendary musician Eric Clapton playing a Strat.

Fender, Guitar, Stratocastor, Electric, Guitar, Music, Musical, Instrument, Canada, Shop

Fun Fact: The Fender Stratocaster was released in 1954 after Fender's Telecaster and Precision Bass.

Key Features

Body Shape and Contours

Stratocaster guitars have a sleek and balanced two-horn design, with well-placed forearm and body contours that make for a comfortable playing experience.

Pick ups

Stratocaster guitars feature a wealth of versatile pickup configurations, from the classic three single-coil design to powerful humbucking versions and more.

Neck and Fingerboard

Stratocaster guitars are known for comfortable and easily adjusted necks with a variety of profiles, eminently playable fingerboards and an unmistakable headstock.  The commonality between all Strats is that the back of the neck is always maple and the fretboard is either rosewood or maple.
